Animal Planet will pay tribute to the late meerkat matriarch Flower, premiering a movie detailing its life before the animal became the first lady on the network’s series, Meerkat Manor.
Meerkat Manor: The Story Begins, which debuted at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, was shot over a seven-month period and follows the real-life adventures of the Whiskers family. It debuts on Animal Planet May 25 at 8 p.m. (ET?PT)
Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg, the film traces the transformation of Flower from a young, inexperienced meerkat into a leader putting her family above all in the fight for survival in one of the harshest deserts on the planet. Viewers witness Flower’s growth as she raises a family, forgeing a legacy amidst the unforgiving landscape and constant dangers of the Kalahari.
The film emanated from a partnership of Oxford Scientific Films/Southern Star, Cambridge University, animal behavioralist professor Tim Clutton-Brock, Animal Planet and Discovery Films.
