Vivendi Universal confirmed that the U.S. Attorney's office for the Southern
District of New York opened a preliminary criminal probe into the company.
It wouldn't say what the feds are looking into. But French authorities --
which have also launched a criminal probe -- are reportedly investigating public
statements made by former CEO Jean-Marie Messier, who was ousted in
September.
