CuriosityStream, the over-the-top subscription VOD service from Discovery Communications founder John Hendricks, has launched a channel on the Amazon Fire TV platform.
CuriosityStream launched in the U.S. in March 2015 with a “Basic” standard-definition tier for $2.99 per month, and a “Standard” offering in HD that runs $5.99 per month. CuriosityStream recently introduced an international offering at $3.99 for SD and for $6.99/month for HD.
Update: CuriosityStream tells us that its pricing is now uniform on a global basis: $2.99/month for SD and $5.99/month for HD.
CuriosityStream plans to launch a 4K offering in 2016.
“Having CuriosityStream available on Amazon Fire TV is a significant milestone for the service, which has not even been in market for a full year,” said CuriosityStream president Elizabeth Hendricks North, in a statement. “Consumers can now access the service in their living rooms, along with Netflix and Hulu, to watch and share with their family and friends.”
Following a recent launch on the Roku platform, the service also supports Web browsers, iOS and Android smartphones and tablets, the Google Chromecast adapter (for its Android apps), and the Apple TV (via AirPlay). CuriosityStream also plans to bring its service to smart TVs platforms as well as Xbox and PlayStation consoles.
CuriosityStream hasn’t released subscriber figures, but the service currently offers a library of more than 1,000 originals and first-run documentaries on topics ranging from science and nature to history and the arts.
