Vonage Rolls Out ‘CBYD’ Service

The latest addition to Vonage America’s phone-service offerings is an 811 call-in number for subscribers to learn whether it is safe to dig in certain areas.

The call-before-you-dig service is aimed at preventing damage to underground utilities such as pipes or cables when subscribers expand their homes, dig ditches or excavate for swimming pools.

Subscriber calls will be routed from the Vonage network to a local call center, which then notifies the local utility companies in the area to mark the approximate location of their underground utilities. People should generally call three days prior to digging in order to give the utility company ample time to mark line locations.

Vonage America is a subsidiary of Vonage Holdings, a broadband-telephony provider.
