With a 3-0 victory in the second leg, America defeated Tigres to capture its 12th Mexican soccer league championship. Univision Deportes rode that record to score the most-viewed Liga MX Apertura final since 2006.
The match, which was simulcast on broadcast network Univision and cable service Univision Deportes Network, averaged 3 million viewers from 6:55 p.m. through 9:14 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14, according to Nielsen data. That total included 1.9 million persons 18 to 49.
According to Univision officials, the match – Tigres won the first leg, 1-0 – was the most-viewed Liga MX Apertura final since 2006 and third most-watched across all finals.
The game, which reached 5.4 million who watched some or all of the action, was the most-viewed club soccer match in the U.S. in 2014, topping entries from the English Premier League, UEFA Champions League and Major League Soccer.
Network officials pointed out that America-Tigres drew 113% more viewers and 140% more adults than the top EPL match in NBC Sports Group history, the Nov.22 telecast of Manchester United-Arsenal that aired on NBC and Fox’s presentation of UEFA Champions League final in which Real Madrid topped Atletico Madrid 4-1 on May 24 by 55% and 70%, respectively.
