If premium cable dominated the TV side of the Golden Globes Awards, the distribution of 'Actors' was much more diverse on Sunday night.
While broadcast’s Modern Family and 30 Rock’s Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey added to their collection of Actors at the 19th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, PBS’s Masterpiece: Downton Abbey won its first for ensemble in a drama series. As for the other five categories, the Actors all went to cable.
TNT and TBS simulcast the 19th annual SAG Awards on Jan. 27 from the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles.
HBO, which last year won five SAG awards, only scored a pair this time around: Julianne Moore won for female actor in a TV movie or miniseries for Game Change, while fantasy series Game of Thrones repeated with stunt ensemble honors in a category that was announced before the start of the telecast.
For Bryan Cranston, the fourth time was the charm as his potrayal of high school teacher turned crystal-meth criminal Walter White scored him an Actor for top male performance in AMC's Breaking Bad. Cranston also was part of the winning ensemble motion picture cast for Argo. Claire Danes continued to pick up the hardware for her portrayal of bipolar former CIA agent Carries Matthison in Showtime’s domestic terrorism drama Homeland.
Kevin Costner, who was honored by the Hollywood Foreign Press with a Golden Globe, added the Actor as best male actor in a TV movie or miniseries for History’s Hatfields & McCoys.
It was Baldwin’s seventh consecutive win for playing network suit Jack Donaghy while Fey was honored for the fourth time. Modern Family extended its string as the best ensemble cast for comedy for a third straight year. For its part, Downton Abbey's drama ensemble win denied HBO's Boardwalk Empire a threepeat of its own.
At the Golden Globes on Jan. 13, HBO (five) and Showime (four) combined to win nine of the 11 awards in the TV categories.
