Nielsen: DVD Players Top VCRs

published A total of 81.2% of all U.S. households now own DVD players versus 79.2% for VCRs, according to Nielsen Media Research’s Third-Quarter Home Technology Report.
Nielsen said that as of the third quarter, DVD penetration in the United States was up 6% from the previous year and climbing, while VCR penetration started to decline. In 1999 -- when Nielsen first started tracking DVD ownership in its Home Tech Report -- DVD penetration was only 6.7% and VCR ownership was 88.6%.
The company added that its Home Technology Report is a primary research survey conducted by phone with 1,253 randomly selected American homes four times per year.
