HBO Taps the Sun

Sun Microsystems Inc. announced that Home Box Office completed its conversion to an all-Sun digital-broadcast architecture using the company’s work-flow and storage technologies.

HBO is using Sun technology to make the transition to a server-based storage and playout system for its 28 standard-definition and four HD channels, as well as its on-demand business.

The premium network is using Sun’s “StorEdge” enterprise-storage and network-attached-storage products, the “Solaris 10” operating system, “Sun Fire” servers and “Sun Java” software.

“HBO is now able to distribute its content on today's multitude of receiving devices without having to build separate infrastructures to support each outlet, helping us to rapidly satisfy consumers who increasingly want to control when, where and how they find and view high-quality media content,” HBO senior vice president of broadcast and studio operations Charles Cataldo said in a prepared statement.
