Discovery Communications Elevates Cosgrove

Discovery Communications has appointed Tom Cosgrove chief operating officer and executive vice President for Discovery Channel and The Science Channel, reporting to president and general manager Jane Root.

In his new post, Cosgrove, who had been serving as senior vice president and general manager of The Science Channel, will manager the overall strategies for both networks.

He will continue as acting general manager while The Science Channel seeks his successor.

With his promotion, Cosgrove succeeds Doug Coblens, who now serves as executive vice president, business strategy and new media for Discovery Communications.

The personnel moves continue the executive suite shuffle that has ensued under a company reorganization under new Discovery Communications Inc. CEO David Zaslav.

“Tom is a tremendous asset to our networks.  He understands both the business needs and realities of our industry, while being completely plugged into the creative, development process,” Root said in a statement. “This will ensure balance and focus as we grow and innovate,” said Root in a statement.”

Prior to joining Discovery Networks, Cosgrove was general manager for TV Guide Channel, where he led direct day-to-day oversight of programming, production, marketing, business affairs, brand strategy, research and operations.

His career also includes stints in senior management positions at ABC Family, Fox Family, Fox Kids, Fox Broadcasting and ad agency Leo Burnett.
