Cisco Boosts DOCSIS 3.0 CMTS Capacity

Cisco Systems announced two DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem termination system line cards, which the company claimed can potentially let a cable operator quadruple its integrated downstream channel capacity.

The Cisco uBR-MC20x20V DOCSIS 3.0 Broadband Processing Engine, for the vendor's flagship uBR10012 CMTS, provides 20 upstream and 20 downstream channels per module.

That, according to Cisco, yields the highest CMTS capacity in the industry with 160 downstream and 160 upstream channels per chassis. The system scales up to 304 downstream channels when used with the Cisco DOCSIS 3.0 Wideband Shared Port Adapter.

In addition, Cisco introduced an 8x8 module, the uBR-MC88V DOCSIS 3.0 Broadband Processing Engine, for the uBR7200 Series router platform which is aimed at small and midsize CMTS networks.

Cisco identified two MSOs -- Hong Kong Cable and Canal Digital Denmark -- that are using the new 8x8 line card to add upstream and downstream broadband capacity to their networks.
