Cablevision First to Hit 100 Mbps
By Matt Stump
Cablevision Systems Corp. became the first U.S. MSO to blow the roof off current high-speed download rates, announcing a 100-megabit-per-second service to its customers using equipment from Narad Networks Inc.
The MSO said it was initially targeting Oyster Bay on New York’s Long Island for a 50-mbps service out of the 100 mbps available.
“The initial deployment of a 100-mbps data service is a powerful and unmistakable indication of the enormous capacity of the state-of-the-art network,” Cablevision executive vice president of technology and engineering Wilt Hildenbrand said.
Narad said its broadband-access network provides up to 100 mbps of dedicated symmetric Ethernet on each of four coaxial cable trunks in a hybrid fiber-coaxial node.
The service will be offered to residential and business customers.
