AT&T Fields Cubs Multiview App Nationwide With WGN America

AT&T and WGN America are taking Chicago Cubs fans across the U.S. inside the Friendly Confines, with an interactive TV app that lets U-verse TV subscribers pick which camera angle they want to watch.

The telco on Tuesday is launching Chicago Cubs Multiview, an interactive TV app that lets U-verse customers view up to four different camera angles of the Chicago Cubs home games on one screen, selecting from the main WGN America game broadcast and among six alternate camera angles.

The app debuted last year, available only to U-verse TV customers in Chicago. The launch this week marks the first time AT&T has made multi-camera angle functionality available to U-verse TV customers nationwide.

Chicago Cubs Multiview will be available to all U-verse TV customers subscribing to U100 and above on channel 780 and also on 1780 (HD) for customers with HD access (which is $10 additional per month). The app is available for the majority of Cubs home games that air on WGN-TV and WGN America for the rest of this season, starting with St. Louis Cardinals at Chicago Cubs on Tuesday, May 10, at 7 p.m. Central.

A WGN America spokeswoman said the multi-camera viewing features were implemented based on U-verse TV used AT&T's specific technology platform. But she added that the network is regularly discussing new features and capabilities with other affiliates.

AT&T has built other multiview "apps" for other content, including the 2010 Olympic Games and the 2010 and 2011 Masters.

The telco introduced the Multiview app in fall 2009 with mosaics of sports, kids and news programming, and a personalized version -- My Multiview -- in June 2010 to let customers choose and watch up to four of their favorite channels at once on their TV screen.
