Communication Technologies Inc. (COMTek) said Thursday that it obtained a franchise to commercially deploy and deliver broadband-over-power-line (BPL) services to residents and businesses in Manassas, Va.
The Federal Communications Commission endorsed BPL last year as a way to offer affordable high-speed Internet services in rural areas and as a viable alternative to high-speed access from phone, cable and satellite service providers.
“We are ecstatic that the Manassas City Council unanimously voted to make COMTek the city's new franchisee for its BPL services,” CEO Joseph E. Fergus said in a prepared statement.
The company added that it is targeting additional locations for BPL launches.
