Continuing to provide clarity on just how much wireline internet the average American consumer is using each month, Charter Communications said median residential usage is around 200 gigabytes.
That jibes with figures released by Comcast earlier this week—numbers that were also disclosed in the context of a first quarter earnings call.
However, Charter also said that customers who don’t also bundle video service with their broadband average 400GB of data usage a month.
Charter didn’t disclose average usage for all customers, so there isn’t a way to directly compare consumption by cord cutters to the general broadband subscriber population.

But as MCN reported in January, research company OpenVault said that median wireline broadband data usage in the U.S. spiked 40% to 145.2 GB in 2018. Average usage was 268.7 GB.
OpenVault said that the number of users averaging more than 1 terabyte of data consumption monthly reached 4.1% last year.
Offering up more consumption tidbits, Charter said it’s mobile users are chewing through less than 10GB a month of data, on average.
Meanwhile, more than 80% of Charter’s wireline broadband customers are in packages that deliver speeds of 100 Mbps or more, and 30% are in tiers that have speeds of 200 Mbps or greater.
