AT&T said it has added Chicago and Atlanta to the list of markets it will target with GigaPower, its fiber-based 1-Gig broadband service.
AT&T hasn’t pinpointed a launch date for GigaPower or announced the specific neighborhoods that will get access to the 1-Gig service first, but did note that it will deploy its new fiber network in parts of Decatur and Newnan, two Atlanta suburbs.
Depending on the areas that AT&T end up targeting, the resulting 1-Gig offering could amp up broadband speed competition in Chicago primarily with Comcast and RCN, and in Atlanta with Comcast and Charter Communications.
Atlanta is also one of nine additional metro markets that Google Fiber is considering for expansion.
AT&T, which recently completed 1-Gig speed speed upgrades in Austin and is planning to offer an 802.11ac-based home WiFi platform to go with it, has begun to roll out 1-Gig into two major markets, and has committed to bring its GigaPower network to several more. In April, AT&T announced it was exploring an expansion of GigaPower to as many as 100 additional cities (opens in new tab) across 25 markets. It has also proposed to expand GigaPower to an additional 2 million customers as a condition of its pending acquisition of DirecTV.
