ADC Unwraps All-in-One CMTS

Network-equipment supplier ADC Telecommunications Inc. is hoping all-in-one
is one for all with its new 'Cuda Packet Telephony Module.'

When dropped into ADC's 'Cuda 1200 IP Access Switch,' the switch becomes a
combination cable-modem-termination system and Internet-protocol-voice
gateway.

'For the first time, cable operators have an evolutionary path to IP
telephony that will easily accommodate future growth,' said Dave Paolino,
president of ADC's IP-cable business unit, in a prepared statement.

The module supports the PacketCable interoperability specifications for
IP-voice services. Each module can control up to 8,160 ports and 900,000
busy-hour call attempts per card, and it can be configured for DS1 or Ethernet
connections.

Also on board are ADC's 'FastFlow Service Fulfillment' provisioning systems,
which can handle IP-address management, inventory, telephone-number management,
voice-routing decisions and telephony/data provisioning. The unit can connect
into either a standard class 5 circuit switch or the next generation of soft
switches.

Plans are to start trials with cable operators this spring, followed by
commercial availability in three to six months.
