RCN last week become the first pay-TV operator and TiVo partner to launch the Opera TV Store, offering a sizable collection of apps.
The launch, offered on MSO-supplied TiVo boxes, will clear the way for RCN to launch hundreds of TV-centric apps, enabling it to stay ahead of platforms from rivals such as Dish Network, DirecTV and Comcast, whose X1 platform is starting off with a relatively limited batch of native widgets and Internet-fed apps.
In the early going, RCN is offering several dozen, including Facebook, Instagram and several weather-related apps.
According to this list provided by Jason Nealis, the operator’s VP of operations and engineering, RCN is offering 98 apps via the Opera TV Store:
