AT&T has introduced its own relatively inexpensive tablet that includes a “TV Mode” feature that provides quick access to apps for DirecTV (the authenticated app for the satellite TV service) as well as DirecTV Now, the OTT TV service that debuted last November.
The Android-powered tablet, called AT&T Primetime, goes on sale this Friday (Aug. 25) online and at AT&T stores for a cost of about $200 -- $10 per month spread out over 20 months with an AT&T installment plan, or $29.99 with a two-year contract.
The specs include a 10-inch Full HD screen, support for dual Bluetooth media streams, Dolby Audio, and a battery that, the company claims, can provide up to 11 hours of usage.
The TV Mode feature provides single swipe access to the aforementioned DirecTV apps from the home screen or lock screen, or by touching the Quick Launch button.
Whether AT&T’s exclusive tablet will amount to much of a subscription driver won’t be known for a while, but it will at least provide another way in the door. AT&T shed about 351,000 “traditional” video subs in Q2, and added 152,000 DirecTV Now subs in the period.
