WOW Deploys PON

WideOpenWest has deployed gigabit passive optical network (GPON) equipment from Calix to provide high-speed data services to small and midsize business customers.

WOW Business Solutions provides business services over fiber-to-the-premises networks in Evansville, Ind., and markets in Illinois, Michigan and Ohio.

“Calix GPON represents a unique opportunity for WOW to better serve our communities with more bandwidth, increased flexibility and lower operational expenses,”  WideOpenWest engineering manager Ron Mattingly said, in a statement.

GPON operates at 2.5 gigabits per second downstream and 1.2 Gbps in the upstream. Calix’s GPON solution can provide voice services, T-1 emulation, metro Ethernet, RF video and other services.

Calix solutions marketing director Dave Russell said the company has at least four other cable operator customers that have deployed PONs but he wouldn’t name them.

“We’ve seen the biggest pickup in the last year or two for the larger cable operators for business services,” Russell said. “For smaller operators we’ve seen pickup for residential deployments, where they’re looking at replacing their old plant with fiber to the home.”

Petaluma, Calif.-based Calix has historically served independent telcos. With the addition of WideOpenWest, Calix now counts more than 100 service provider customers for its GPON fiber-to-the-premises solutions.

Calix will be exhibiting at the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers’ Cable-Tec Expo conference in Philadelphia this week.
