WGN to Air 'Wrigley 100' Event

WGN-TV will honor America’s second-oldest ballpark on Wednesday with live coverage of Wrigley Field’s 100th birthday celebration.

Coverage of the event, called Wrigley 100, will begin at 12:30 p.m. CT on WGN-TV Chicago and nationally on WGN America. WGN’s Dan Roan will host the special, which will honor the 100 years of baseball that have taken place in the friendly confines since the Chicago Federals first hosted the Kansas City Packers at the then-Weeghman Park on April 23, 1914.

As a tribute to that first event, the Chicago Cubs will don Federals uniforms and visiting team the Arizona Diamondbacks will wear Packers gear during the game that immediately follows Wrigley 100 on WGN.

Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig will be present at the event along with classic Cubs players like Ernie Banks, Andre Dawson and Kerry Wood. A team of Cubs alumni will take the field in their former positions for the ceremonial first pitch.

Football legends such as Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers will also be present at the event, which will honor the Chicago Bears’ 50 seasons of play at Wrigley Field (1921 to 1970).
