Verizon Piles On FiOS Franchises, Launches

Verizon Communications announced two video franchises for its Verizon FiOS TV service and an expansion of its availability.

The regional Bell operating company won its ninth video franchise on New York's Long Island last week, with the board of Smithtown granting the phone company rights to offer FiOS TV to the town's unincorporated areas of Commack, Kings Park, Lake Ronkonkoma, Nesconset, Smithtown and St. James.

Earlier in the week, the Board of Selectmen in Hopkinton, Mass., granted Verizon a cable franchise.

And the telco is now taking orders for FiOS TV in parts of the Long Island villages of Oyster Bay and East Norwich and the unincorporated portions of Farmingdale, all of which are covered by the Town of Oyster Bay's video-franchise agreement.
