Trio Fare 'Flops’ in June

Television and film’s all-time flops will get another shot at stardom as part of Trio’s programming schedule this June.

Among the themed fare set to air during the stunt are two original documentaries that highlight the screen’s biggest failures. Flops 101: Lessons from the Biz, premiering June 6, will offer an overview of major debacles within the realms of television, film and stage, according to Trio president Lauren Zalaznick. The one-hour documentary will highlight such lowlights as Coupling, Central Park West, Waterworld, Taboo and Capeman.

Final Cut: The Making of 'Heaven’s Gate’ and the Unmaking of a Studio, set to bow June 13, will chronicle the demise of United Artists studio in part because of the disastrous performance of that film.

Also on the docket: a takeoff of the net’s Brilliant But Cancelled series dubbed Just Plain Cancelled, featuring shows that “deserved to be cancelled,” notably the Steven Bocho-directed musical police drama Cop Rock, as well as sitcom My Mother The Car.

Trio will also air a Madonna movie marathon during the week of June 7, as well as a week-long presentation of the greatest theatricals flops, beginning June 6.

While the programming highlighted during the month didn’t receive much initial fanfare or ratings, Zalaznick said viewers would be interested in taking a behind-the-scenes look at these vaunted mishaps.

“The way we look at flops is that they’re great … they’re just on the other side of success,” Zalaznick said. “A flop is a resounding statement of genus gone awry — they didn’t just failed, they thudded in the culture.”
