Time Warner to End NYC Phone Trial

AOL Time Warner Inc. is terminating a 1,000-home local phone trial in New
York, citing changed financial-market conditions.

The Federal Communications Commission released a public notice Thursday
stating that the phone company, doing business as Time Warner ResCom of New
York, would be allowed to discontinue service in 31 days unless its Manhattan
customers can't find a reasonable substitute.

An AOL Time Warner spokeswoman said the phone service was a circuit-switched
trial that the company wanted to wind down to focus on rolling out
Internet-protocol telephony.

AOL Time Warner told the FCC it had made arrangements for customers to switch
to Verizon Communications and other local phone carriers in the
market.
