Steinert-Threlkeld to Helm 'MCN'

Tom Steinert-Threlkeld, a longtime business journalist and an editorial executive at Ziff Davis Media, has been hired as the new editor-in-chief at Multichannel News, effective Sept. 26.

He replaces Marianne Paskowski, who retired from MCN and parent company Reed Business Information in July.

“When Multichannel News was born 25 years ago, the idea that there could be more than a handful or two of channels of video programming was radical and unproven,'' Steinert-Threlkeld said last week. “Now, there are more channels than anyone can count; and the eventual number will be limited only by the imagination, insight and willpower of companies and individuals, as bandwidth escalates and the cost of tools keeps dropping. But Multichannel News will stay on top of this sea change, as programming itself adapts and finds its way to viewers and users on multiple channels, from cable to satellite to the Internet to mobile networks.''

At Ziff Davis, located only two blocks from MCN's New York City newsroom, Steinert-Threlkeld was vice president of the Enterprise Group and founding editor-in-chief of
Baseline magazine. Baseline is a magazine and Web site focused on information-technology project leadership. Baseline's awards, since its 2001 inception, include the 2005 Grand Neal Award (American Business Media's highest honor) for a case study of a series of deaths in Panama that resulted from an unanticipated use of software. Baseline also was a finalist in the category of general excellence in this year's National Magazine Awards.

Prior to starting Baseline, Steinert-Threlkeld was chief content officer for Ziff-Davis Internet, developing new online businesses across the Ziff-Davis portfolio. From 1994 to 1999, he was interactive services editor, editor in chief and editorial director of Inter@ctive Week.

Charlie Koones, president of RBI's Reed Television Group, said: “Tom is a truly accomplished journalist, a pioneer in electronic publishing and has a true entrepreneurial spirit.

“In stepping to the editorial helm of Multichannel News , Tom inherits a first-rate staff and an enviable market position. Together with this team, he is the right guy to lead this market-leading publication and Web site into its next chapter.”
