Science Channel On Brink Of International Programming Sales

Discovery Communications will look to extend its science-based original programming internationally with the development of an original slate of shows that will air domestically and then be sold overseas.

The first of those shows is Brink, which will debut on Science Channel in November, according to Discovery officials. The series, hosted by Australian personality Josh Zepps, will examine people who are on the brink of changing our lives through cutting-edge breakthroughs in technologies and discoveries. It will also include content generated from scientists, organizations, universities and viewers from around the world.

Discovery will look to offer Brink, the first major original series commissioned by Science Channel under the oversight of Discovery Emerging Networks president Clark Bunting, to television outlets across the world.

"Only Discovery Communications can offer this type of high quality science programming to international broadcasters," said Caleb Weinstein, senior vice president, Discovery Enterprises International in a statement. "This innovative new format allows for complete regional customization."

In the states, Brink will have a major presence online via sciencechannel.com. Online users can watch extended interviews, interact via science blogs, upload and view user generated videos, talk to Zepps and other correspondents, take quizzes and explore additional research materials.

The show is the first of several science-related content that will be developed for Science Channel over the next year, according to Deborah Adler Myers, Discovery Emerging Networks' senior vice president of programming.

"Brink is the first of many exciting new series in our new development pipeline and something only a dedicated service like Science Channel can create," she said in a statement. "Brink is a thought-provoking and engaging series that connects viewers with incredible science and technology stories from around the world."
