PowerTV Inc. has reached another milestone, claiming that 6 million
digital-cable set-tops in North America house its operating system.
PowerTV said that footprint currently covers more than 50 percent of cable
subscribers in the 100 largest systems. The majority of set-tops that use
PowerTV's software are made by its corporate parent, Scientific-Atlanta Inc.
PowerTV made its first shipment in the fourth quarter of 1998. It reached 1
million in November 1999 and hit 5 million in December of last year. Last
quarter, the company said set-top-box vendors licensed and shipped its OS at a
clip of 100,000 copies per week.
