Nortel Enhances Router

Nortel Networks’ new-and-improved “Shasta 5000” broadband-services node is now the “Services Edge Router 5500,” the vendor said Tuesday.

The company said new scalability and performance enhancements enabled though third-generation control and subscriber-services modules will enable broadband-optimized routing capabilities to be combined with broadband aggregation and Internet-protocol-service capabilities often missing from traditional edge routers.

The enhancements are scheduled for general availability in July, Nortel added.

The Services Edge Router 5500 will also support the DSL Forum's emerging TR-059 specification, a framework for delivering tiered IP levels of service over a digital-subscriber-line infrastructure. This will enable bandwidth on-demand for interactive voice, video, entertainment and gaming applications, Nortel said.
