has given the go-ahead for the two companies to tap into the new "Go2Broadband" initiative, which enables vendors to sell cable modems directly to consumers.

Go2Broadband links retailers, PC vendors and cable operators to a Web-based "one-stop shop" for high-speed-deployment information. In turn, consumers will be directed to query Motorola Broadband and Com21 Go2Broadband-enabled sites to determine whether high-speed cable services are offered in their neighborhoods and seek out stores that sell Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification-certified equipment.

AT&T Broadband, Comcast Corp. and Time Warner Cable have pledged to support Go2Broadband.
