Motorola is extending the security features of its widely deployed “MediaCipher” content-security system into Internet protocol-based video delivered via cable data networks.
The vendor is showing off the security extension as part of its “Moto Me” demo at its booth during the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers’ Cable Tec-Expo.
As cable operators begin to offer IP-video services shipped around on Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification home networks, making sure content is secure will be crucial, according to Motorola.
MediaCipher IP uses a common infrastructure with Motorola's traditional cable conditional-access system, so it can create a single control system for digital set-tops on a conventional network, IP-set-tops on a switched video network and IP devices on a DOCSIS-based network.
It also has plugs that will fit with deployed electronic program guides, video-on-demand systems and interactive applications.
“Now, cable-service providers can securely deliver digital content to IP devices that connect to their network using the same Motorola rights-management system they have relied upon for years,” Motorola corporate vice president and general manager of connected-home digital-video solutions John Burke said.
“Motorola's investment in MediaCipher IP technology can give operators a flexible path to launch new, bandwidth-efficient services,” he added.
