Layer3 TV Adds 4K Fare From The Smithsonian Channel

Layer3 TV, the Denver-based MVPD, is the first pay TV provider to carry The Smithsonian Channel’s 4K VOD library.  Layer3 TV added the programmer’s HD linear channel in October.

The Smithsonian Channel’s 4K offering includes 10 hours of content that is refreshed each quarter. Example of titles offered in 4K from The Smithsonian Channel include Mysteries of the Rainforest, Aerial America, Sacred Sites and David Attenborough’s Conquest of the Skies.

Layer3 TV also has 4K distribution with Insight TV and NASA TV, and has offered several live TV events in the format, including Fox Sports’ 4K college football coverage, and the Bellator NYC mixed martial arts fight night in June.

Layer3 TV supports 4K on all its set-top boxes, though customers will also need a 4K-capable TV to take advantage of content delivered in that format. Layer3 TV said more than half of its subs depend on the provider for 4K content.

Denver-based Layer3 TV has launched in Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington D.C., Dallas/Ft. Worth, and Longmont, Colo. A launch in New York is in the works.
