Iowa cable operators may be getting some video-on-demand competition from local telephone companies.
Kasenna Inc. said it is shipping its "MediaBase XMP" software and "GigaBase" video servers to Iowa Network Services Inc., a private company that provides network-transport, Internet-access, broadcast-video and other services to 146 independent telephone companies that serve 280,000 business and residential customers in the state.
"We serve a lot of different providers across a large region, so we needed a system that was robust enough to support a large deployment and flexible enough to interoperate over any telephone company's local-loop distribution system," INS vice president of network engineering Howard Juhl said in a prepared statement.
The first telco plans a VOD deployment April 15, INS said.
