Harmonic Gains FTTH Nod

Harmonic Inc. said its video-transport systems received TL 9000 certification, which will pave the way for it to be used by telephone companies building fiber-to-the-home platforms.

A group of telecommunications operators and suppliers created the QuEST Forum and associated TL 9000 quality-management system to certify technology for FTTH builds like the one Verizon Communications is pursuing in the United States.

"Harmonic's complete FTTP video solution enables RBOCs [regional Bell operating companies] and other telcos to more quickly and cost-effectively introduce compelling broadcast and on-demand television services," said Patrick Harshman, president of Harmonic's broadband-access-networks division, in a release.

Harmonic supplies MPEG-2 (Moving Picture Expert Group) and MPEG-4 decoders, plus headend and transport equipment for telco buildouts.
