Gemstar-TV Guide International’s StarSight Telecast subsidiary filed a patent-infringement lawsuit against Toshiba in Tokyo District Court, alleging that Toshiba infringes one of its Japanese patents, including claims covering techniques for providing certain interactive program guides and for controlling recordings from IPGs.
Gemstar-TV Guide said its patent portfolio includes nearly 200 issued patents and pending applications in Japan.
“We have endeavored to license Toshiba as a commercial partner for their sales of consumer electronic devices in Japan that use IPGs covered by our patents, but to date, negotiations have shown no meaningful progress,” Gemstar Multimedia president Akitaka Nishimura said in a prepared statement.
A Toshiba representative could not immediately be reached for comment.
