Galavisión Makes Big Splash With Celebrity Challenge

What do trampolines, high boards and a pool have to do with celebrities? Everything, if it involves longtime Spanish-language television host Alan Tacher.

Tacher, a co-host of Univision’s weekday wakeup show Despierta América, has teamed up with Televisa sports reporter Mercedes Aguirre in hosting El Gran Chapuzón, a holiday season reality series that saw its U.S. premiere December 14 at 7pm on Galavisión.

The program initially aired in Mexico on Televisa’s Canal de las Estrellas from Feb. 16 to March 9.

Translated as “The Big Splash,” El Gran Chapuzón features 15 entertainment and sports notables from Mexico who are tasked with executing complicated dives from varying heights, vying for the highest score from the judges and votes from the audience. Each of the stars trains for their performances alongside professional instructors. The result: Celebrities surprising even themselves with back flips and somersaults.

Produced by Televisa, the celebrity participants for the four-episode, two-hour El Gran Chapuzón include telenovela actress Barbara Torres, winner of Nuestra Belleza Mexico 2004; telenovela actresses Diana Golden and Gabriela Goldsmith; Mexican wrestler “El Elegido”; former soccer player Johan Rodriguez, and singer Maya Karunna.

El Gran Chapuzón is an adaptation of a reality-show format developed for the Dutch television program Sterren Springen op Zaterdag. Versions of the show have already aired on Telefe in Argentina and Antena 3 in Spain.
