Former ‘MCN’ Editor in Chief Tom Steinert-Threlkeld Mourned

NEW YORK — Tom Steinert-Threlkeld, former editor in chief of Multichannel News, died on Oct. 20 from complications of injuries suffered in a traffic accident while riding his bicycle.

According to reports, Steinert-Threlkeld, 59, was struck by two vehicles not far from his residence in Weston, Conn. Known professionally as “TST,” he was MCN’s editor in chief from 2005 to 2008 and editorial director of the magazine and sister publication Broadcasting & Cable from 2007 to 2008.

The veteran business technology journalist had been serving as editor in chief of IBT Media’s CruxialCIO, a recently launched online service that advises business and tech leaders on how to respond to critical events. An avid cyclist who made a number of cross-country and international treks, Steinert-Threlkeld was also editor in chief of Edge of the Road, a website for cyclists.

Born in New Jersey, Steinert-Threlkeld is survived by his wife Kayte and their two children, Zachary, 26, of San Diego, and Shane, 23, of Stanford, Calif. A memorial service was set for Oct. 26 at Cobb’s Mill Inn near the family home.

Steinert-Threlkeld’s death is the subject of a hit-and-run investigation by Bethel, Conn., police . Police provided no further updates at press time.

Kayte Steinert-Threlkeld wrote in a Facebook posting on Oct. 21: “ Our only consolation is that Tom was doing what he loved to do, riding his bike on a beautiful day and taking photos — and did not suffer.”

A graduate of the University of Missouri with a degree in journalism, Steinert-Threlkeld also held an MBA from the Harvard Business School.

Steinert-Threlkeld served as a reporter and technology columnist on the business desks for The Fort Worth Star-Telegram and The Dallas Morning News. In the mid-1990s, he became editor of Inter@ctiveWeek, the first business-to-business publication focused on the Internet.

In 2001, he launched the monthly Baseline, which examined corporate IT projects. The title won a Grand Neal award and was a finalist for a General Excellence award from the American Society of Magazine Editors.

He joined SourceMedia in 2009, before leaving this past June to join IBT Media.
