Chipmaker Entropic expanded its portfolio after putting up $13 million in cash to buy Mobius Semiconductor, a maker of low power analog mixed signal semiconductors.
Entropic, which announced the deal on Thursday (June 6), said the addition will strengthen its ability to produce lower power, high-speed devices for cable and satellite operators, including set-tops, gateways and outdoor satellite units.
Entropic, a key supplier of Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA) silicon, also develops system-on-chip (SoC) products for set-tops and gateways for companies such as Cisco Systems, Pace, EchoStar Technologies and Roku following its $65 million acquisition of Trident last year. Technicolor is also using an Entropic processor to power MediaPlay, a gateway based on the Comcast Reference Design Kit software stack.
With the latest buy, Entropic will establish a design center presence in Irvine, Calif. Mobius founders Dr. Aaron Buchwald and Dr. Avi Madisetti are among those joining Entropic via the acquisition.
