Emcore Bows DOCSIS 3.1 Transmitter

Emcore Corp. said it’s using this week’s Optical Fiber Conference in Anaheim to debut the Medallion 6100, a DOCSIS 3.1-compatible 1500 nm externally-mounted transmitter.

Emcore, which will also show the product at the China Content Broadcasting Network (CCBN) show this week in Beijing, said the new transmitter supports the DOCSIS 3.1 spec of 1.2 GHz and “optionally” up to 3.5 GHz in the SAT-IF band for new international satellite deployments.

“The MEDALLION 6100 transmitters extends bandwidth for DOCSIS 3.1 compatibility, while adding advanced platform features to support cable operators as they migrate their networks to the latest technology,” Gyo Shinozaki, vice president of marketing at Emcore, said in a statement.

Emcore has previously introduced a new line of DOCSIS 3.1-facing laser products.

Its new products are entering the mix as cable operators start to test and deploy DOCSIS 3.1, a next-gen IP platform that will deliver multi-gigabit speeds over HFC networks.

Among MSOs, Comcast recently kicked off a an “advanced consumer trial” of a DOCSIS 3.1-powered 1 Gbps broadband service in Atlanta ahead of expected deployments later this year in Nashville, Chicago, Detroit and Miami.
