East Rockaway Tunes Into FiOS TV

Verizon Communications’ FiOS TV service is set to expand once again on Long Island, N.Y., this time via a new franchise approved by the East Rockaway Village Board of Trustees Tuesday.

East Rockaway falls within the town limits of Hempstead, which has already awarded FiOS TV a video franchise. But given its status as an incorporated village, East Rockaway required separate franchise negotiation.

The franchise now awaits final approval by the New York State Public Service Commission. If that goes through, East Rockaway will be the eighth community on Long Island and 13th in New York state approving franchises for fiber-optic-delivered FiOS TV. Other Long Island communities include Massapequa Park, Cedarhurst, Laurel Hollow, Lynbrook, Mineola and Oyster Bay.

In all, Verizon has video franchises covering about 3 million homes in parts of California, Florida, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Texas and Virginia.
