Cox Goes Wide With ‘Panoramic WiFi’

Cox Communications said it has completed the nationwide launch of Panoramic WiFi, a premium-level whole-home WiFi service that starts at $9.99 per month.

Cox introduced Panoramic WiFi last fall in areas such as San Diego, Orange County and Santa Barbara, and wrapped up the rollout following introductions in Las Vegas; and Tucson and Phoenix, Ariz.

The Cox Panoramic WiFi service centers on a modem/router with a DOCSIS 3.0 24/8 modem integrated with 24/dual-band 802.11ac WiFi. That’s combined with 24/7 support, access to My WiFi, a network management app for iOS and Android mobile devices, and a customized WiFi installation.

Cox is also renting out WiFi extenders that utilize MoCA 2.0 technology for $4 each per month.

Panoramic WiFi customers can also connect to more than 500,000 hotspots that are currently part of a Cable WiFi roaming consortium that includes Cox, Comcast, Charter Communications and Altice USA (via its acquisition of Cablevision Systems).

In February, Cox touted the whole-home WiFi service, which uses “It’s wall-to-wall fast” tagline, in with an ad that ran regionally in San Diego during Super Bowl LI.

Cox joins several other cable operators and ISPs, including Comcast, Atlantic Broadband, Midco, and Frontier Communications that have rolled out or plan to deploy whole-home WiFi platforms that take aim at dead zones.

“With Panoramic WiFi, our customers are getting a consistent, dependable and high-quality connection in every room in their home – even while moving between rooms,”  Philip Nutsugah, Cox’s vice president, product strategy and management, said in a statement. “Since launch in October 2016, we’ve seen rapid adoption and positive feedback from high-speed internet customers. As more devices get connected in the home, Panoramic WiFi becomes the backbone.”
