CNN Latino’s Former Florida Affiliates Debut New Look

A year ago, CNN Latino entered the 2013 Upfronts with confidence, thanks to a programming lineup that included topical discussions with Camilo Egaña, Fernando del Rincon’s nightly newscast Panorama USA and programs devoted to lifestyle, fashion and celebrities.

However, CNN Latino failed to win clearances in key Hispanic markets. Explaining that “CNN Latino was not able to fulfill our business expectations,” the unit of big brother CNN was shut down in late February -- leaving a programming hole at some of the stations that had aligned itself with the news network.

In the Sunshine State, quick action led to a near-seamless March 7 transition from CNN Latino to a new information and debate-focused mini-network dubbed Mira TV. The network will focus exclusively on Hispanics in Florida, with WDFL in Miami serving as its flagship. Mira TV is also airing 24/7 on WATV in Orlando and WTAM in Tampa.

Among the programs found in Miami following the change to Mira TV are Buenos Dias Miami, a morning show featuring Tomas Garcia Fuste; local newscast Noticias 18 with Paula Lamas; cooking show Cocinando con Don Davis; medical show Dr. Misael with Dr. Misael Gonzalez; and the long-running news and information talk show Maria Elvira with journalist Maria Elvira Salazar.

On April 24, Mira TV announced the addition of two nationally known stars to its lineup: Veteran news anchor and commentator Rick Sanchez and Cuban entertainer and host Alexis Valdés. The Alexis Valdés Show will air weeknights at 9 p.m.; Valdés was previously a part of the Mega TV prime-time lineup. The Rick Sanchez Show takes the 10 p.m. slot and is the former CNN anchor and Fox News contributor’s first Spanish-language TV show.

"We are thrilled to bring our viewers the best programming in Florida," Judith Prado, vice president of Mira TV, said. "We want Mira TV to be the channel of choice among U.S. Hispanics in Florida, through quality programming with shows that cover breaking news, lifestyle, entertainment, documentaries, interviews and debates."
