Cine Latino, the Spanish-language movie channel, is expected to announce this week (Dec. 3) that it has acquired major film packages from Sony, Walt Disney, MGM, Lionsgate and Gussi, a movie distributor in Mexico.
The deal includes some 90 films from Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, Spain, Peru, Puerto Rico and the United States. Financial terms were not disclosed.
“Through our new acquisitions, we have reinforced our position as the destination for the widest and most current selection of Latino blockbusters available on the market,” said Jim McNamara, chairman of Cine Latino, the movie channel owned by InterMedia Advisors, Panamax Films and Mexico City’s Grupo MVS.
Among the recent acquisitions are El crimendelPadre Amaro (Sony); Secuestro express (Disney) and American visa (Gussi).
The new offerings are not limited to Spanish-language titles, though. Cine Latino has also acquired some English-language films touching on Latino themes, including Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto, about Mayan civilization; Peter Sollett’s’ Raising Victor Vargas (MGM); and Puerto Rican film Yellow,starring Rosalyn Sanchez (Disney.)
Also through acquisitions from Sony, MGM and Disney, Cine Latino has assembled the largest showcase of Pedro Almodóvar films ever to be presented on a Spanish-language service. Titles include Volver, La mala educación ; Todo sobre mi madre and ¡Atame!
These Almodóvar films will be available exclusively on Cine Latino, which reaches approximately 3.5 million U.S. cable and satellite subscribers.
