Atlantic Broadband has jumped on the 1-Gig wave after launching a speedy offering to residential customers in Indian Creek Village, a well-to-do segment of the Miami-Dade area. The MSO is now “evaluating expansion opportunities.”
Pricing for the service and the number of homes that have access to the new 1-Gig offering was not immediately known, but Atlantic Broadband did say that the service is not encumbered with a data cap, and that it is offering it in tandem with a TiVo-powered video package featuring more than 350 channels and integrated access to the Netflix streaming service, and a phone service that includes unlimited local and domestic calling and up to four phone lines.
Update: About 40 properties in the Indian Creek Village area have access to the new 1-Gig offering, an Atlantic Broadband spokeswoman said via email. “As for pricing, the needs of Indian Creek Village were unique so custom service packages were created that include all of Atlantic Broadband’s TV services, Gigabit Internet and four phone lines. Currently, there is not a published a standalone price for Gigabit Internet,” she added.
The company noted that it is using the RF over Glass (RFoG) technology for its network extensions, referring to an SCTE-standardized platform that allows cable operators to continue delivering RF-based services (including video) over fiber lines, while also retaining their legacy headend, backend systems, in-home wiring, and CPE (set-tops and modems).
“Moving forward, Atlantic Broadband expects to use both FTTH and DOCSIS platforms as appropriate to the circumstances,” the official added.
The Miami area is poised to become a high-speed hot bed. Last month, AT&T announced that it planned to bring its fiber-based “GigaPower” platform to the city, but did not say when it expects to introduce services in the area, which also served by Comcast. AT&T is also considering GigaPower deployments in several areas in the Miami area, including Hialeah, Hollywood, Homestead, Opa-Locka, and Pompano Beach.
Atlantic Broadband boasted that it beat others to the 1-Gig punch in the Miami area.
“Atlantic Broadband is proud to be the first company to deliver 1 Gigabit Internet service to its customers here in the Miami Beach area,” said David Keefe, Atlantic Broadband’s SVP and GM of South Florida, in a statement. “While other companies are talking about what they will be doing, Atlantic Broadband moved forward and started offering this service in one of its communities. We look forward to extending access to our Gigabit Internet service to other properties and communities within our Miami footprint.”
Atlantic Broadband, a wholly owned subsidiary of Canada-based Cogeco Cable, serves more than 230,000 residential and business subs in western Pennsylvania, Miami Beach, Maryland/Delaware, and Aiken, S.C.
