Amazon Fire TV Amps Up Apps & Games

Amazon has been sparking up more content for the Fire TV, announcing Friday that it has tripled its selection for the device since its launch in April and now features more than 600 apps and games on the streaming platform.

While the Fire TV offers a mix of video apps, nine of the top ten grossing apps on the platform are games, Steve Rabuchin, vice president, Amazon Appstore, said in the announcement.

Amazon said the most popular media apps and services for Fire TV are: Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube.com, Plex, Pandora, WatchESPN, VEVO, iHeartRadio and Crackle.

The most-played games are Asphalt 8: Airborne, Minecraft: Pocket Edition, Despicable Me: Minion Rush, Hill Climb Racing, Hungry Shark, Sev Zero, Riptide GP2, Solitaire, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (Kindle Fire Edition), and PBA Bowling Challenge.

Amazon hasn’t released sales figures, but the company is “very happy with the success of Fire TV,” an Amazon official said via email.

The competition faced by the Fire TV is expected to heat up as more devices and TVs equipped with Google’s new Android TV hit the market alongside a current crop that includes the Apple TV, the second coming of the Google Chromecast adapter, and a mix of boxes and smart TVs that run the Roku platform.

And it’s clear that Amazon could use a new hit in its device lineup after disappointing launch of the Fire Phone. On Thursday, Amazon posted an operating loss of $544 million and reported a $170 million charge for unsold Fire Phones and related costs. Amazon also reported revenues of $20.6 billion that missed estimates despite a 20% year-over-year increase.
