Roku Seeks MVPD Guru

Roku has had some success bridging authenticated TV Everywhere apps to its platform, including Time Warner Cable’s TWC TV app and HBO Go, but a new job opening suggests that the company is preparing to accelerate those efforts around the globe.

Over on LinkedIn, Roku has recently posted for a director of business development, MVPD, a job that will spearhead Roku’s initiatives with cable operators, satellite TV and telco TV providers, and other forms of multichannel video programming distributors.

“Specifically, the Director will seek to have MVPDs, large and small, deploy ‘TV Everywhere’ channels on Roku,” the posting explains, noting that those “channels” include support for both live TV streaming as well as on-demand content.

Although the job will apparently be based in Los Angeles, the goal will be to gain support from MVPDs for all regions where Roku is available. Currently, that list includes the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland.

In addition to convincing MVPDs to make pay-TV services available on Roku, the job could also include work with terrestrial broadcasters. Among that group, one possible target is ABC, whose authenticated Watch ABC app is now offered in all eight ABC-owned stations markets, and has its eyes on a much broader rollout. Watch ABC is presently supported on Web browsers and iOS- and Android-powered tablets and smartphones.

The new job will also come into play as Roku, which has shipped more than 5 million devices in the U.S.,  launches a new line of streaming devices and looks for the Roku Streaming Stick to help it secure direct deals with TV manufactures.
