Vivid Entertainment said it plans to release an adult film directly to video-on-demand distribution, boasting that it’s the first time a porn-movie producer has used VOD as “a primary distribution channel.”
The movie, My Ex-Girlfriend, starring former Penthouse magazine model Brea Lynn, is set to premiere July 2 on VOD. Vivid said it is also distributing the movie in HDTV format.
Vivid’s pay TV distributors include In Demand, which distributes Vivid’s adult films on cable systems owned by Comcast, Cox Communications, Time Warner Cable, Cablevision Systems, Charter Communications and other operators.
Eventually, Vivid plans to simultaneously release adult titles through VOD, on pay TV systems and on DVDs in stores.
“We plan to run our VOD and DVD operations as parallel businesses and will continue to maximize both channels of distribution,” Vivid co-chairman Steven Hirsch said in Thursday’s announcement.
