Turner to Offer IPTV with SA's Encoders

Turner Broadcasting System will use Scientific Atlanta’s MPEG-4 D9034 encoder to provide video signals over Internet protocol for telecommunications companies offering IPTV services, SA announced Thursday.

According to the companies, the move will make Turner the first U.S. linear programmer to provide its own MPEG-4 signal for IPTV providers.

SA's MPEG-4 decoders will be installed at Turner’s Techwood campus and CNN Center -- both in Atlanta -- to provide IPTV signals for CNN, CNN Headline News, TNT, Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies.

“Turner Broadcasting is pleased that by the end of the year, it will be able to provide five of our popular cable-television networks to licensed operators in an IPTV-compatible format,” Turner Network Sales vice president of domestic distribution Mike DeHart said.

Turner said it plans to eventually deliver all 10 of its linear networks in MPEG-4 format.
