Syniverse Technologies, a provider of mobile messaging and networking solutions for service providers, named former Cox Communications chief technology officer Scott Hatfield as CTO.
Hatfield takes over the CTO spot from Jeff Gordon, whom Syniverse promoted to president and CEO in June 2011.
Hatfield spent almost 15 years at Cox, eventually serving as the cable operator's CTO and chief information officer, before resigning in June 2010. Cox this year hired former Clearwire CIO Kevin Hart as its chief technology officer.
Cox is a Syniverse customer. The MSO announced last year that it would use Syniverse's suite of mobile messaging, roaming and network solutions to allow Cox's CDMA wireless subscribers to send text and multimedia messages to users on other networks.
Most recently, Hatfield was vice president of consulting firm Capgemini's cable practice. He also has worked for Ohmeda, Xerox Corporation, Ford Motor Company and General Dynamics.
"With more than 25 years in the technology industry, Scott brings superior expertise and perspective to Syniverse," Gordon said in a statement. "His focus will be on fortifying operational excellence, sustaining customer focus through process engineering and automation, driving continuous improvement, and working with our lines of business to rapidly propel new offerings to market."
Hatfield will be based in Syniverse's headquarters in Tampa, Fla., and will lead a global organization with operations in more than 25 countries. The company has 900 customers worldwide, which include mobile operators, cable and Internet providers, and enterprises.
Major Syniverse customers include AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint Nextel, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, MetroPCS, Videotron and Cox.
