SureWest Scores NFL RedZone Pact

SureWest Communications is adding NFL RedZone to its programming roster.
The overbuilder, which serves some 130,000 subscribers in the Sacramento and Kansas City DMAs, has reached an agreement with the NFL Network to add the ad hoc Sunday scoring/highlights channel on its sports tiers in time for the kickoff of the 2011 pro football season.
SureWest launched NFL Network last Sept. 9, and presents the service in high-definition on channel 669 in Kansas City, where it counts some 45,000 subs, and on channel 624 in Sacramento, where it serves 85,000.
The NFL RedZone launch emanates from an option in that NFL Network contract, financial terms of which were not disclosed.
NFL RedZone will be available to customers with the SureWest Sports package and who subscribe to its Digital Choice (California) or Digital Cable (Kansas City) offerings -- mid-level service packages -- or higher. NFL RedZone will air on channel 574 (HD and standard-definition) in California and on channel 671 (HD) or 492 (SD) in Kansas City.
The SureWest Sports package, featuring eight networks, retail for $5.99 per month in California and $2.99 in Kansas City, according to a spokesman for the provider.
"Demand for NFL RedZone among our customers has grown exponentially over the past year, so we are very pleased to add it to our lineup for this year's NFL season," said Peter Drozdoff, SureWest's vice president of marketing, in announcing the rollout.
Noted NFL Network vice president of affiliation distribution for John Malkin: "We are pleased that NFL RedZone will now be available on SureWest. SureWest subscribers can now enjoy the only channel that features every touchdown from every game on Sunday afternoons."
NFL RedZone, produced by NFL Network, features live action from every NFL game on Sunday afternoons, delivering the touchdowns and most exciting moments as they happen. When a team goes inside the 20-yard line, NFL RedZone takes fans there. The channel updates in real time, switching from game to game with live check-ins, highlights and a chance to see the key plays.
