Starz Inks Screen Media Deal For Vongo

Starz Entertainment acquired Internet distribution rights for more than 100 feature films from Screen Media Ventures for distribution via Starz’s Vongo online movie-rental service.

Financial terms of the multiyear deal were not disclosed. The deal allows Starz to offer 24-hour pay-per-view rentals for the films during “wide license periods.” Starz added that some movies under the deal will also be available for pay-per-download purchase when Vongo offers that feature in the future.

Titles covered under the deal include the 1978 cult horror film Piranha; Men Seeking Women, a comedy starring Will Ferrell; Mojave Moon, a comedy starring Angelina Jolie, Danny Aiello and Anne Archer; Creator, a romantic comedy starring Peter O'Toole, Mariel Hemingway and Virginia Madsen; and Blue Desert, a thriller starring Courtney Cox-Arquette.

Vongo, priced at $9.99 per month, provides access to more than 1,000 movies and a live, streaming feed of the primary Starz TV channel.

Screen Media Ventures, formed in May 1999, acquires and distributes movies to television stations, cable networks, and home video outlets throughout the world. The company has a library of more than 900 motion pictures.
