Rogers Launches HD DVR

Rogers Cable Inc. said it has launched HD digital-video-recorder service to its digital-cable subscribers in Ontario, New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

The MSO is using Scientific-Atlanta Inc.'s “Explorer 8000HD PVR” set-top. Rogers said the set-top can record up to 20 hours of HD content or 90 hours of standard-definition product.

Rogers said the set-top will rent for $24.95 per month, or consumers can purchase it for $799. The company also plans to charge a $1.99-per-month service fee.

The 8000HD is being offered at select Rogers Video and Rogers Plus stores, plus other retailers.

Rogers is also rolling out Motorola Inc.'s “DCT 6208 HD DVR” in its eastern Canada Motorola markets.

The Motorola box can record 10 hours of HD or 50 hours of standard-definition product, Rogers said. The Motorola box sells for $699. Otherwise, the monthly lease fee is $19.95.
